Your new favourite Sutton United screen grab shows us third place in the English Football League Two.
Describe it how you wish, Sutton either battled for or grinded out a one nil win over Harrogate. Omar Buigel combined well with Donovan Wilson who efficiently slotted the ball into Harrogate net to take the lead with thirty minutes gone in the first half. It should be noted that before the game an impeccable minute’s silence was observed to the four young lives lost in a house fire at Collingwood Road on Thursday night. That Road is close to Sutton United’s ground.
Sometimes it is said a game needs a goal to come to life. This game, rather than come to life, continued to splutter, long balls and no real momentum from either side. Shots at goal came and went with nothing much to set the pulse racing. That was until the nineteenth minute when Bouzanis saved, finger tipping the ball over the bar to prevent one of those perennial heart-breaking late goals against Sutton United. It was not to be, one nil it finished with Sutton going into Christmas third place in the English Football League Two. As all around us had games postponed, ours went ahead and we took full advantage.
As games got postponed this was the chance for supporters of another London team to sample some Gander. They would have seen an ok game but should any of them have gone down to the La Curva side of the ground as I did at half time. They would have observed what at first sounded like singing but could be interpreted as ritualistic chanting as followers of Turkey Barry sang his praises. They would later gather at a nearby temple to sacrifice a local ham at his feet. In America they have an official “pardoning” of the White House turkey but in Sutton we get this -)
So, the long day ends with Sutton United supporters sharing screenshots of the EFL2 table showing us in third place which is an automatic promotion place. It is exciting but I still want us to reach the fifty points tally which guarantees survival in this league. As we head into an uncertain winter who knows what will happen in the league. We can survive in this league, reach the play-off games, or wait for it to get automatically promoted. Getting relegated back to the National League while not impossible is the least likely thing to happen. Watch out Sunderland, Derby, and Sheffield Wednesday we could be playing you sooner rather than later. No harm to have great big Turkey dreams. Do turkeys dream about ham? Can Sutton United get promoted? Enough silly questions, onwards to Bristol and beyond.
