Sutton United have been cancelled or more accurately postponed.
When the news flashed up on Friday night that the Colchester v Sutton United game was postponed, I was a bit gutted what with my match ticket booked and train arranged. My reaction was emotional or if you want a bit selfish. Take your pick. Being a football fan is emotional, referee decisions, sitters missed and games lost can mess with your emotions. Then very soon after you adjust your emotional lens you see the bigger picture as to why Sutton United sought to postpone the game because
“We have had to inform the league today that due to the emergence of a number of positive Covid-19 cases in the squad.. “ full statement on the clubs website.
Your thoughts naturally turn to the players affected having testing positive for covid positive, hoping they’ll be ok. Over on Twitter some Colchester fans didn’t take the news well. I’m not judging them as behind Twitter and all other social media networks you don’t really know the real lives lived behind the profile. Some may have lost jobs, friends, family, health or they may be just fine, who really knows. When Saturday comes it’s a game, an escape and an emotional two hours watching a football game.
All is not lost, the postponement gives both sets of supporters, Sutton and Colchester a chance to see what other games that are on in the area.
Lastly, the postponement partly on account of Covid is a sobering reminder that the pandemic is still around and ready to surprise us. This postponement could be a portent for the season ahead as we move into autumn and winter. As we do, I will cling to any optimism I can find like the optimism I’m feeling for Sutton United now that Tanto is back at the club. Stay safe and have a great Saturday whatever your doing.
