How Sutton United went into the Forest and came out with a point.
Considering the last time, we went into the Forest Green Rovers we heartbreakingly came out with null points today’s result was a good result. What will keep the memory of today’s game alive was a peach of a goal from Kenny Davis.
As is often the case my match dark starts in a Mr. Good way with a pre match meal at the Gander. It is like a wedding; I wander the tables to see where Mr. Good has put me. I like the randomness of it all and the chance to listen to great football stories, Sutton United history and get tips for away fixtures. One story that fascinates me is hearing from supporters who because of a ground move or being priced out have put some water between themselves and the ‘big club’ they have supported. But here we are all at Sutton United.
Two fixtures of a pre match meal are a few words from Matt the Manager with a chance to ask him a question. One question, a great one was around the respect visiting teams have in the way they set up to play us and the relief some clubs feel about leaving the Gander with a point in the bag. This shows how far we have come as a club.
This was a good game to watch. FGR played some good football, their passing was well constructed but Sutton got stuck a few times to disrupt their play. Before the game I thought unoriginally that this was a one all draw. Even as Sutton lead, I thought the game was more likely to produce a FGR leveler. So, it was when FGRs Kane Wilson scored to bring it to one all. The game had its share of excitement with Sutton attempt cleared off the line or was it over the line.
Unfortunately, Inspector VAR was not around with some goal line technology. VAR is here, it's just not evenly distributed. Football is having its ‘White Heat of Technology’ moment. The World Club final between Chelsea had semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) trialed. Seen through the prism of helping referees I take a more optimistic view. One piece of tech that referees have tested to exhaustion is their whistle which the ref blew to end a match that ended in a fair result. I stayed on a little to clap the team off, I am fortunate I do not have to rush off to catch a train or get the car out of the ground.
We come back together in two weeks’ time at the Gander to play Scunthorpe at the Gander. Draws are so yesterday let us celebrate a win.
